Guide for Hose Failure Analysis
Common Causes for Failures

Common symptoms and solutions for hose assembly failures:

HOSE MINIMUM BEND RADIUS

SYMPTOM: Hose bursts at outside bend of hose. Has taken a set (usually oval) and remains in bent position yet remains flexible. Possibly some broken wires in area of failure on outside bend of hose. If application is a vacuum or suction, the hose may tend to be flattened out in bend area, which may hinder or restrict the flow. If bend is severe enough, the hose may exhibit a kink.

CAUSE: Violation of the recommended minimum bend radius or starting bend right at the fitting.

SOLUTION: Replace hose assembly. Re-route hose assembly to increase bend radius according to the requirement. The hose should not begin to bend for a minimum distance of two times the inside diameter of the hose then stay within minimum bend requirements. Use the proper clamps as required.

  • Minimum Bend Radius is the smallest radius that a hose can be routed in service.
  • When determining the bend radius of the application also consider movement, operational changes and flexing.
  • General rule: The hose should run straight out of the fitting shell for a distance at least two times its inside diameter before it begins to bend.
